ICEM - USA Home Page

Welcome to the ICEM-USA Web Page!

The International Council for Educational Media's "chapter" in the United States is, in reality, an Affiliated Organization which is sponsored by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and its International Division.

At the end of this series of pages you will find links to our international ICEM web page as well as one which will allow you to join ICEM-USA or join in your own country.

In our ICEM international web page you can learn all about ICEM and the many activities which our organization offers to each of you. The purpose of this ICEM-USA web page, however, is to provide you with enough reason for you to want to become one of us. Enjoy your trip.

ICEM-USA: A new approach

Until recently, the only people who belonged to the International Council for Educational Media were its national representatives, most of whom were their nation's lead instructional technologist within their Ministry of Education or associated other ministry. In many instances, these same individuals or their successors are still serving as their national's representative but....the door to open membership to all professionals interested in our work has now been opened!

In the United States, given that we have no "Ministry of Education" per se, the task of representing our nation fell to AECT, who in turn, asked the International Division to act as our spokesperson at the international table.

When AECT was known as DAVI (the Department of Audiovisual Instruction), it was the job of Dr. Anna Hyer to represent the United States on behalf of our country and our organization. When we became AECT, Dr. Howard Hitchens represented us for several years, followed by Dr. Ron McBeath of San Jose State University. In Vienna in 1990, thanks to the tutelage of Ron McBeath, Dick Cornell was accepted by the ICEM Executive as the National Member from the United States, and in 1993, was elected by the ICEM General Assembly to serve as ICEM Vice President. In 1997 he was elected ICEM President, a dual position he presently holds.

In 1997 the ICEM Statutes were revised and updated and a Strategic Plan implemented, patterned in large measure, after the one originally created by AECT.

In December of 1996, the office of the General Secretary was moved from Paris to Barcelona, given that our dear friend Dr. Robert Lefranc, retired from this position, as did his most able assistant, Ms. Annie Papavoine.

In December of 1998, the office of the Secretary General was moved from Barcelona to Frankenthal, Germany, given that our dear friend Jackie Hall, retired from this position, as did her most able assistant, Neus Batille.

The new Secretary General is Margo Van Sluizer. Her address is: Hans-Fay Strasse 1 -D67227 Frankenthal, Germany. The phone number is: 49 6233 46051; the Fax is: 49 6233 46355 and E-Mail is: secretariat@icem-cime.org.

Why you might wish to become a member of ICEM-USA...

Enough of the past, what of the present...how may we entice you to join us?

If you are a professional in our field, we invite you to become a member of what we hope will become a solid voice in the international arena. As an ICEM member, you automatically receive invitations to attend all of our functions, no matter in which part of the world they might occur.

ICEM Media Week

Each year we feature the ICEM Media Week, five jam-packed days and nights of exciting viewings and demonstrations of the latest video productions, computer programs, and more, from every corner of the globe. At each of these events there is spirited discussion as to the latest production techniques, emerging content, and marketing trends.

You will have an opportunity to meet many of the video and CD-ROM producers and designers firsthand, and, as you are a member of ICEM, you may also enter your own materials for screening by all who attend. The ICEM Media Week is fast becoming a true international marketplace for those who design and produce materials for education and training.

A unique feature of the past several ICEM Media Weeks has been a co-production meeting in which interested producers are invited to submit proposals in an effort to partner with others from around the world. Please refer to the International ICEM web page for details. The next Media Week will be in Slovenia from October 11-15, 1999.

This event is of major importance to our Corporate Members as it provides them international outlets for their many educational products.

ICEM Student Media Festival

Each year ICEM holds an International Student Media Festival in Switzerland and invites schools, colleges, and universities to enter their best work for judging in the international arena. Competition is fierce to get accepted and one is considered to be the "creme de la creme" if their entry is chosen as a winner.

This event is of major importance to students in grades K-University.

ICEM Congress and General Assembly

Each autumn, typically during October, ICEM is invited by one of its member nations to hold their annual Congress and General Assembly in their country. It falls to the host nation to suggest a program theme and to invite international speakers to come to this event and share their expertise. It is an opportunity for each of you to present your own ideas in an international forum, as well as to exchange information between and among people from many different nations and cultures. Following this event an issue of Educational Media International (EMI) features the best of the best presentations, thus sharing the information with its members and the world at large.

The next ICEM Conference will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, 11-15 October 1999.

In October of 1996 the annual meeting was held at the world-renowned conference center, Scanticon, just an hour's drive north of Copenhagen.

Who has not heard of Copenhagen's
famous "Mermaid"? Just one of the
sights visitors to the ICEM '96
meeting saw.

Let me take you back in time to see some of the previous sights during our ICEM Autumn meetings

Mainz, Germany, 1995

High atop the hotel, the Mainz General Assembly
was busy at work defining future goals and directions for ICEM.

During our one-day respite from a week filled with work, we found time to relax while we explored the fertile vineyards along the Rhine... ...and we even had time to sample both the cuisine and wine unique to that part of Germany.

Eger, Hungary, 1994

Once more to the General Assembly,
this time in Hungarian tones.

The Agria Media Congress featured
a number of commercial exhibitors as well.
"Miss Hungary," center, saw to our
logistics needs with diplomacy and excellence.

Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, 1993

The traditional opening of every ICEM Congress features words of welcome from our President, Asgeir Gudmundsson, from Iceland (third from the left) and our Catalan hosts. The ICEM General Secretary, Ms. Jackie Hall, is shown, second from the right.

A quick trip between sessions allowed us to visit the world famous cathedral by Gaudi, which remains yet unfinished...

...as well as a run to the nearby market to sample some of the world's finest seafood.

But then, alas, it was back to work as that
infamous team from the University of Central
Florida did a reprise of its AECT New Orleans
travesty on how NOT to make presentations,
"What Mom Forget to Tell You." This time it
was done in both English and Spanish.

Reykjavik, Iceland, 1991

Annie is presented an ICEM gift by Dick Cornell and center,
Admiral John Bell, Editor-in-Chief of Educational Media International.

A day trip showed us the Icelandic "White House"... ...as well as some of the exposed fault lines where the Tectonic plates clatter about from time to time.

Well, those are but some of the highlights of our most recent ICEM events…there are many more images which we treasure, but suffice to say, we hope you get the idea that being a part of ICEM-USA affords each of you innumerable opportunities to learn in many diverse settings.

We hope you will join us as, together, we learn from each other, around our world.

I invite you to view our International web page for ICEM.
